Wiki Cancelled procedure question - I've never had this happen before

I've never had this happen before, so am just trying to get the billing correct. Patient was scheduled for an ACDF but it was cancelled in the OR, prior to anesthesia. Would I bill the primary procedure code with a modifier -53? I don't know if Alaska Medicaid will even pay for it, but I'd like to try. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

As far as I can tell, that would be correct modifier attached to the discontinued procedure.

You also need a V64 dx code as a secondary diagnosis. This will state the reason the procedure was cancelled.

and I suggest sending the claim hardcopy with the op report attached which will explain to the carrier why the procedure was cancelled (hopefully the provider documented the reason...)
