patient was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, due to a viral infection in the past. Obviously, the viral infection has since cleared, however, the cardiomyopathy still persists. Provider wants to use code "cardiomyopathy in diseases classified elsewhere." I don't know how to code that since the viral infection is gone. Any suggestions?

Hi,

If i'm the coder and the documentation did not mention any definite cause or type of cardiomyopathy, I would use I42.9, Cardiomyopathy, unspecified.

There are a lot of factors that may contribute to having that condition. Possibly in the past it is due to viral infection. However, on that encounter, the physician did not give a confirmed reason.

Thanks,
