Hello. Can someone assist me with correct coding for a cardioversion in the ED, as I'm unable to find any information regarding the use of this code per encounter? (Including CPT Assistant) My ED provider attempted a cardioversion 3x, each with a different shock(Joule) amount trying to get patient into sinus rhythm. There were 3 attempts in the same visit, do I code 92960, 92960-76, and 92960-76 for the 3 seperate attempts at the various Joule powers? OR...do I only code it once, no matter how many separate attempts and powers they tried? There is nothing out there regarding how many times this can be coded in the same charge session/visit. Please supply the link in which you have found the information if any. Thank you for your help.

This CPT Assistant article was never updated for the new code but same principle, unsuccessful attempts are billable, modifier 52 would not be necessary.

Question
If a cardioversion is not ultimately successful, would it still be appropriate to report code 92960 for a complete cardioversion procedure?
AMA Comment
Although CPT does not limit the use of procedure codes according to whether or not a procedure is successful, it is important to determine whether or not the procedure was actually provided in its entirety. If an elective cardioversion is provided in its entirety, regardless of whether or not the procedure is successful in converting the patient's heartbeat to a regular rhythm, you should report code 92960, Cardioversion, elective, electrical conversion of arrhythmia; external.

The original question, to me, were unsuccessful attempts but if they kept upping the power in one session = 1 service. The MUE currently is only two per day - my take is each attempt would have to be a different time of day/separate sessions.
