Hello! I work with Inpatient Psych, and we've recently come across a few patients being diagnosed with Catatonia, without a known psychological condition. I've spoken to the provider, and at the time of the visit, it was truly unknown what was causing the catatonia. What diagnosis code would you use for it?

The ICD 10 index shows Catatonia (schizophrenic) is F20.2, so that's what I'd use.

"Catatonia" is sufficient for coding F20.2. The word schizophrenic is in parentheses, so it does not have be stated per ICD-10 conventions for parentheses.

Now, if the provider said "Catatonic" and not "Catatonia," that would be a different story. However, "Catatonia" is pretty cut and dried that it indexes to F20.2

Thank you. Our issue with this is that the patient does not have schizophrenia. And while is it a nonessential modifier in the Index, when you look at the Tabular it lists Schizophrenic catalepsy, Schizophrenic catatonia, and Schizophrenic flexibilitas cerea. F20.2 is also under the Schizophrenia code-set.
