Hello,

I am trying to determine what the most appropriate code selection would be for cognitive behavioral therapy. I have a few clinicians and coders who are saying 97129 and 97130 would be more appropriate then codes 90832,90834,90837. I personally think CBT is a form of psychcotherapy included in the psych codes above (90832,90834,90837).

I’m concerned there is confusion on the difference between cognitive brain therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I could certainly be wrong.

I’m hoping there’s an expert with some knowledge on behavioral health coding.

97129 and 97130 are used for Speech-Language Therapy. 90832,90834 & 90837 are used for CBT services. I would not feel comfortable billing any other codes other than the specific psych therapy codes for CBT. Those are the codes that are used for the CBT services we perform.
