I am scheduled to take the CEMC exam this Saturday, October 7. Outside of the usual coding manuals, what other source are you allowed to bring? Can I use the CEMC study guide? Thanks.

Study guides and exam prep materials are not allowable references for an AAPC exam.

If you have the AMA E/M companion that was bundled with 2023 CPT books, you could use that for your additional reference: https://www.amazon.com/Companion-2023-American-Medical-Association/dp/1640162763

You could use the AAPC reference guide for Evaluation & Management Coding: https://www.aapc.com/medical-coding-books/evaluation-and-management-coding-reference-guide/

You can also use the specialty guides, though I'm not sure if there's one that is specific to E&M. I used the Hematology/Oncology one as my reference when I took my CHONC: https://www.aapc.com/medical-coding-books/coders-specialty-guides.aspx

A medical dictionary is also allowed as your additional reference, if you'd find it useful.

Anything that is designed to be a professional reference on the job would be acceptable. Optum or other publishers might have an E/M reference guide too. The only restriction is exam prep material like a study guide, practice exams, etc.

I took the CEMC just a few months ago. I used the AMA E/M companion as my additional reference. And I took the AMA chart (with some tweaks/additions based on the NAMAS chart) to use as my audit worksheet. I think I used the E/M companion only once for a nursing home visit question. Compared to the CPC, it seemed much easier and I finished with plenty of time to spare. If you are familiar with the current E&M guidelines, and already passed CPC, CPMA, CCS-P, CPC-P, I don't expect you to struggle.
