Has anyone ever come across this procedure?

My Surgeon did a 'mediasternotomy' to place the ECMO cannulas, then closed the chest (by wiring) after tunneling the cannulas out through the skin. The patient did not have to be put on bypass.

36822 can only bill for cannulation for prolonged circulation; ECMO is used for long-term support ranging from 3-10 days whereas bypass is short-term, measured in hours.
