Does anyone know if a physician's office is required to have a certified coder doing the billing?

There was some discussion in the past that CMS would require certified coders to be within practices that received Medicare payments, but this has not been the case. Any practice or provider who is concerned about compliance, however should employ a well-trained certified coder. Many organizations require their coders to be certified (my hosptial does), and smart organizations provide education dollars to keep everyone up to date on the changes.
But as of now, there's no federal regulation that requires practices to employ a certified coder. It would be a good idea, though.
