What diagnosis code would I use for a chemical dependancy screening if the patient ended up to have no history of any chemical dependancy they just did a screening to check? We are billing CPT 99409 but they used diagnosis 799.9 and the insurance is denying.

You should use a screening V code as you do for all other screenings, even 799.9 is a symptom code and screening implies an asymptomatic patient with no complaints.

Thanks I knew that 799.9 wasn't correct but I was kind of torn between using V79.8 and V82.89. I wasn't sure of V79.8 V79.8 because it says mental disorders and developmental handicaps. I know chemical dependency could be described as a mental disorder but I wasn't sure if it was considered a developmental handicap. Diagnosis code V82.89 is just other specified conditions so I wasn't sure if insurance would pay that either.

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)
