I'm looking for the specific CPT Coding Guideline which states the CPT code which most accurately describes a procedure must be used.
Digital Retinal Scanning performed in the home setting. The camera used produces a report which is read and interpreted by an ophthalmologist. The screening results are sent to the ophthalmologist to read and provide a report which is submitted back for coding and inclusion into the medical record. Although 92250 provides a basis description, 92228 is more descriptive of the entire process. I need to provide the CPT coding guideline which states we need to use the CPT which describes the screening the best.
92250, Fundus photography with interpretation and report
92228, Imaging of retina for detection or monitoring of disease; with remote physician or other qualified health care professional interpretation and report, unilateral or bilateral.
Any assistance you can provide with identifying the correct CPT Coding Guideline would be greatly appreciated.
