What is the difference between Chronic Pain and Chronic Pain Syndrome? CPS states that it is associated with significant psychological dysfunction. Typically we code Chronic knee pain as 719.46, 338.29. When a Dr. says Chronic Pain Syndrome, but there isn't a psychological dysfunction should we code the chronic pain code or CPS? We really need to know the difference for accuracy and we aren't able to find an accurate answer.

If chronic pain and chronic pain syndrome documented, I will go with the chronic pain syndrome code because its more specific and also 338.29 excludes 338.4.
