I have a question regarding coding CKD stage with an improved GFR that was posed by a physician. The patient was previously diagnosed with CKD stage 3 and based on improved GFR would now be considered stage 2. Would this be coded as stage 2 or 3? My thought would be stage 2 as there is no code for "CKD stage x in remission". Can I get some other thoughts? Does anyone have any documentation I can use as a reference tool?

Thanks
Amy

Hi Amy,

Code by the stage of the disease. The exception is if the patient is on dialysis, the code is 585.6. The disease process often changes through the years, so changing the ICD-9 code is fairly common. Hope this is helpful!
