Code 44 states that you have to notifiy the patient of a change in status prior to discharge.
If a patient is admitted to an inpatient bed and then based on subsequent review the inpatient level of care does not meet the hospital's admission criteria, Condition Code 44 comes in to play. CMS states the patient must be notified, of the change in status, prior to discharge, however sometimes the patient is discharge prior to being notified. All attempts are made to notify the patient prior to discharge, but there are times when we are not successful. We want to ensure that our process is keeping with the CMS guidelines, but we are unable to find any information regarding what happens if the patient had been discharged prior to notification. Looking for comments.
