Hello-
I believe my provider may be using CPT code 19340 for breast reconstruction, regardless of whether the mastectomy occurred on the same day or in the past. From what I understand, this could be incorrect coding.

In cases where the mastectomy was performed previously, or if the reconstruction is being done in connection with breast cancer treatment—whether due to a personal history or risk factors associated with breast cancer—it seems that CPT code 19342 would be more appropriate. I’d like to confirm whether this switch is necessary, especially when the documentation includes ICD-10 codes related to breast cancer or genetic risk indicators.

Hi,
In 19340, the physician inserts a breast implant on the same day (during the same surgical session) as a mastectomy.
In 19342, the physician inserts or replaces a breast implant on a separate day from a previous mastectomy.

So, if these surgical cases are not on the same day as the mastectomy, then yes, they are incorrect if coding 19340.
