As secondary dx codes they can be used if the situation calls for them. E codes can never be primary.

E codes are used in Radiology but only as secondary codes. They are important especially for workman's comp cases where the findings are negative
example :
knee pain, fall from ladder, negative findings on xray
719.46 (knee pain) or 959.7 (knee injury) then E881.0 (fall from ladder)
you can also follow with place and activity
example :
