Wiki Code for S/P Knee Replacement with knee pain

Hello,

Need help with coding knee pain after a knee replacement. My understanding that is if a patient presents for knee pain after a knee replacement, I should be using a complication code. For example, Provider states in the assessment and plan that the patient is have knee pain, status post knee replacement surgery, should I be using a T84.84 code for the complication of pain due to prosthetic device implant. Is this correct since the knee has bee removed and replaced?

It will really depend on the documentation.. is this normal postoperative pain within the postoperative time frame? Did the provider indicate that the artificial joint was causing the the pain? If it is postoperative pain then use a G89 code for acute post operative pain and not a complication code.
