My office manager just asked if I had ever heard that it is illegal for a coder to post payments. Apparently, in a PAHCOM forum, another office manager posted the question. This manager said she has 3 certified coders. Two of them recently approached her stating they could not legally post payments due to a "conflict of interest". Is there any merit to this statement?

I have never heard of that! I worked in a private practice and we posted payments all the time as a coder/billing specialist anything to do with the business office we did it. Now I work for a hospital but still have never heard of this.

Nothing in any regulation states this - it is driven by job descriptions and policies of facilities. Sounds like these people are trying any way possible to get out of doing work!

I've worked in small and medium sized practices and as a coder I was responsible for handling the whole account from keying in the charge, coding, working denials, as well as posting the payments. How do they figure that posting a payment is a conflict of interest?

I work for a small company doing remote billing and coding and am greatful for the opportunity to observe the revenue cycle, from data input to the final results of working appeals. I think this multi-faceted approach strengthens ones skills as a coder and biller and increases their value as an employee.

I agree with Lance. I never heard of such a thing and would also agree that it may simply be the policy of the employer. Many coders perform billing and posting routinely.
