We are having issues with auto insurance reimbursement for ART being done by our chiropractors. They are certified to do it, but we keep getting denials. We are using code 99530 as there is no defined CPT code for it and including documentation when submitting. Anyone else having this issue and if so, how are you billing it? We had been billing for muscular release but ART takes it a step further so we decided to change our strategy. Any input would be appreciated at this point as we are at a loss as to how to proceed. We have documented and documented time, location, and activity til we have run out of ink on the printer, but this company refuses to pay it.

As someone that reviews bills for auto and works comp, we consider active release as a manual therapy (97140). Manual therapy can be considered bundled in some cases and doesn't always get paid, totally depends on the areas being treated because we only pay for the injury that the insurance company has accepted liability for. Hope this helps :)

As a coder who bills for a chiropractor specializing in ART-I bill 97140-59. As long as the ART is done on a different site/area than the manipulation (98940-98942 AND 98943) then you can bill 97140-59.

I have not had any problems getting this code paid. We also document the time for units.
