I have some payors that constantly fight us because we have IP stays admitted before 10/1 and discharge after 10/1. Our HIM department codes the claims with the codes effective 10/1. Is there a rule I can quote for these payors that our claims are coded correctly?

With inpatient it has always been based on admit date so if the admit date was prior to 10/1 then you should use the 2010 dx codes for the discharge.

sorry I meant the 2011 dx codes as for admit date prior to 10/1 2011 opposed to the 2012. sorry for the confusion.
