Please I need some opinions regarding to this documentation " Hyperlipidemia due to DM Type 2" by Physician. Can I use the codes 250.80 plus 272.4? In my opinion if the doctor support this relationship with a good documentation we can code as mentioned because Diabetes Mellitus is considered secondary cause of dyslipidemia. In patients with type 2 DM, hyperlipidemia occurs in association with insulin resistance and frequently involves increased triglycerides and low HDL. Also the 2012 HEDIS Criteria Comprenhensive Diabetes Care includes LDL-C screening and control (<100 mg/dl) for Diabetic patients. I would like to know what is your opinion and if any guidelines clarify this.

Thanks.
