Does anyone know whether we should code "Deferred" under Axis II in the DSM-IV? There seems to be a question at my office as to whether we do or not. My understanding of "Deferred" is the physician has chosen either to not address that concern(in this case personaility disorders) or can address it later. It was suggested that we use 799.9 for 'Deferred". This is a new Inpatient clinic for us, so any help will be appreciated!
Thanks,
debralynne

If the clinician states deferred, do not code it. You're correct...the clinician has chosen to not select a diagnosis (at this time), so to report 799.9 (which technically is a symptoms) is incorrect.
