Question concerning coding for assistants:

The coders have been asked to start coding for all assistants during surgery even if the CPT does not allow an assistant to be paid for. We have to bill every assistant so they can get RVU credit.

Is this correct coding or would it flag insurance companies for an audit.

Thank you

They can be coded and entered into an in-house billing system for tracking and accounting; no claim should be sent. Coding it internally for tracking is different than filing the claim.
