Need help with coding and billing for keratoconus. I'm new to optometry coding and the office has been billing 92072 for initial fitting. I am wondering what codes to use for subsequent fittings? CPT says to report using E&M services or general ophthalmological services. Can you share what your experience is with subsequent fittings coding. Thanks, Rosie

You will always use the 92072 when fitting the patient for contacts. I believe that is ment by subsequent visits are the visits to get the correct lens fitted for the patient. Fitting a patient with KC is a long time consuming process especially if they are new. For return visits to see of the contact is working you charge out a 92012 or a no charge, it is a provider preference.
When the patients vision changes and has to be "fitted" for a new lens then you charge out the 92072 again.
Hope this helps
