There is not a code for specimen collection by swab that I am aware of. We charge an E&M level when MRSA, VRE, RSV, or Strep collections are done.

What would u code if a dr. saw a pt. w/ viral syndrome and cough. The dr. circled E&M level 4(99214). A swab was collected.What code should be used for the collection of viral swab?????????

Is there some type of rapid test kit involved? i.e. Rapid flu kit (87804) or maybe a rapid Strep test (87880)? The specimen could be taken from the throat, nasal, sputum, etc....
