When the baby is admitted to the NICU with the gestational age 37,38,39 weeks what code in Icd10 is assigned to the baby's record?
ICD 10 has codes for gestational age up to 36 weeks then again for weeks 40 to 42. Icd9 had codes for weeks less than 21 up to 37 or greater.

ICD-10 codes were developed for short gestation/preterm birth (less than 37 weeks) and for long gestation (40-42 weeks). Gestation of 37-39 weeks would not be reported but if the neonate is light or small for gestational age, that is reported with codes in category P05. I hope that is helpful.

NICU weight coding ICD 10

If the baby is in NICU using CPT 99478 - 99480 how would you determined which of the ICD-10 P05 codes to use? Newborn light for gestational age or Newborn small for gestational age
and would you always use a weight ICD-10 code or would you use a dx code for what condition they are treating?
