I need help in shedding some light on how to correctly code a diagnosis. We have a debate going on in our office regarding how to code a diagnosis of pain of the metatarsus of the right foot. The majority says the code would be metatarsalgia (M77.41.) Others say M89.8x7. I am trying to understand how to get to the correct code. If someone could explain which code is right and why, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for any help!

I don't have my book with me to double-check, but the Index will lead you to correct coding: Pain > Foot (or metatarsus if listed). Do not assume or read additional possibilities into a diagnosis if not clearly stated. The M89.8X7 code is for "other specified disorders of bone." I wouldn't use that unless no other code captures the stated diagnosis, but the Index leads to M79.41.
