There has been some debate on how to code a FU to feeding problems/weight check in a newborn. All feeding problems have been resolved and the patient is just being seen to make sure they are gaining weight properly.

We are currently billing out a V20.31 or V20.32 with a 99212-99215, however, some insurances aren't paying stating that a V20.31/V20.32 is a 'routine health check dx' and should be billed with a 99381. To my understanding these are not routine codes but just a regular health check codes.

Is this the correct way to bill or is there a better way to bill? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Nb feeding issues

The codes v20.31 and v20.32 are routine codes for use when nb comes to the office for their check ups. A v code means the service is routine for pe, screening labs etc. When we bill the feeding issues for newborns we use 779.31. Hope this helps :)
 
Do you only code the 779.31 for the first 28 days and then switch to an adult code? A co-worker has been given two directions so we are trying to round up some opinions! Thanks.
 
Do you code/charge for infants that come to the office just for a weight check? Even if it's not a "feeding problem" the provider just wants to make sure the infant is gaining appropriate weight.
 
Also that raises the question - Did your provider see the newborn in the hospital, if so can you code using the 99381 or should you be using the 99391 since this is in fact not the first time they have been seen by the provider? :confused:
 
V20.31 and V20.32

For children between 8-28 days the V20.32 was set up just for that purpose.

I use the V20.31 for the 1st visit in the office if the baby is under 8 days and the V20.32 with a 99212-99213 for a weight check, if the baby truely is not having feeding difficulties.
