Patient comes in for cholecystectomy in the morning. afterwards she has trouble with her 02 sats so the surgeon admits her for observation. a second
physician does a consultation on the same day as the admit to observation.
Can he get credit for his consultation?
Thanks!!

If not admitted then we code for office consultation,

Separate specialty

If the surgeon requested a consultation from another physician of a different specialty, and the "consulting" physician documented his/her service appropriately, then, yes the consulting physician can charge a consult (99241-45 if patient is in observation status ... considered outpatient).

HOWEVER .. if the second physician is in the same practice and same specialty as the surgeon but happens to be "covering" the unit ... then, no ... the service would fall under the global post-operative period.

Hope that helps.
