Hi. I am currently an online Medical Coding student. I have had some class experience with coding and also with Medical Billing. I chose to do Medical Coding Specialist course because I love the whole idea of matching the dx with a code. I am wondering if I didnt kick myself in the foot by not also doing the Medical Billing. Can I make it as just a coder? Do any of you work as both a biller and coder? Would it be to my advantage to go back and also do the Billing Specialist course? Any thoughts would be great! Thanks!

I have taught the medical coding program. The course always had classes in medical insurances, medical billing as well as coding classes. Have you only had coding classes. I believe you must have an understanding of insurances as well as the billing process. Hope this helps

Hi Jtk. I have no billing experience. The course that I am taking just has a short intro to billing but nothing to write home about. I want to make sure that I am not missing out on jobs if I only know how to code. Im still wondering I should try to take a billing course too.

Coding only

You would be much more versatile if you also had billing background. Many newly graduated coders are having difficulty getting that first coding job. Some are getting in through the billing department or even by working Accounts Receivables-figuring out why the insurance company didn't pay the claim.

I think it helps to know both actually when looking for a job. I went to coding school which rarely emphasized the billing part of it. I am working as a medical biller currently and there is so much to learn about the whole billing process that I never knew before. For me, I am finding billing pretty challenging because it keeps me very busy and on my toes.
