Hello,

I just started a new position within my company (Medical Coding Specialist). It's a brand new position so I am trying to come up with workflows. I will not be doing the initial coding for the providers, however we have edits set up in our EMR systems (ex. new vs establish) that will drop to me if it is coded incorrectly. I will then review documentation and apply the correct code. I will have access to make these changes myself within the system and the chart, but also need to keep the providers aware of these changes as well as document the work I am doing. I don't know the best way to do this. Spreadsheets? Email? etc. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Our office has a similar system in place, the charge entry or billing technicians will flag the visit to a shared desktop in the EMR. The auditor will review and make any coding updates. These updates are then documented in a shared excel file, split out by facility. The spreadsheet includes provider name, dos, brief error description, pt id #, whether or not the problem was addressed with the provider and finally if the provider acknowledged the outreach. The end goal being to drill down common errors and find ways to mitigate them in the future.
