I wanted to verify if i would use CPT code 45384 or 45388? for when a provider does colonoscopy and destroys a poly by monopolar electrocautery please?

thank you

45384 is for hot biopsy forceps/bipolar cautery I would use this one.
45388 would be laser ablation or other method

Question:

The descriptor for code 45384, Colonoscopy, flexible; with removal of tumor(s), polyp(s), or other lesion(s) by hot biopsy forceps, was revised in the CPT 2015 code set to no longer include bipolar cautery as the method used to perform this procedure. What is the appropriate code to report a colonoscopy with polypectomy in which bipolar cautery is used to remove the polyp?

Answer:

Hot biopsy forceps uses electrocautery, therefore, code 45384 would be the appropriate code to report colonoscopy with polypectomy in which bipolar cautery is the tool used to perform the procedure.
