I heard that medical billers are not supposed to be doing the coding. But according to gov laws, can the doctor code his own bills and then give them to the biller?

There is no law that I am aware of that says a certified coder must code all bills. Anyone can assign the codes based upon the documentation in the medical record. This includes doctors, nurses, billers, the 18 yr old you just hired to do filing... Although any practice utilizing the last option needs to seriously rethink their staffing.. LOL

Physicians and Coders

The provider whose name is on the claim is ultimately responsible for everything on the claim but that certainly doesn't mean the provide has to do the coding.
