I need to run this by someone before I go back the physician. I am billing for a general surgery practice with multiple doctors. A patient was admitted to the hospital for shortness of breath, by a pulmonolgy practice. One of the surgeons in our practice was consulted and subsequently place a pacer. The following day another of our surgeons was asked to see the patient because of pleural effusion, and he would like to bill for a consultation. I think this should be a subsequent visit with a 24 modifier.

I need your opinions.

Our doctors do the same thing and they always want to bill a second consult on the same admit date. We bill the first consult whenever they see him/her and subsequent visits after the initial visit during the same admit period. Insurance companys won't pay for 2 consults done on the same admit period. Hope this helps :)
