what codes should use when a dr see pt in medical unit hospital and perform psych consultation.should use 99221-99223 or can they use 90817-90822. i like to know codes 90817-90822 is psychotherapy code in psych unit hospitalization or can be use in medical unit too.

Inpatient Psych. Consultation

Provider could use the 90801 Psychiatric Diagnostic Interview or a subsequent hospital E/M (99231-99233) for a Medicare patient.

Provider can use 90801 or a consultation code (99251-99255) for Non-Medicare patient.
Billing and code depends on insurance carrier guidelines and patient's policy.
