Hi Everyone,

I need clarification on correct ICD-10-CM code assignment when COPD, emphysema, and asthma are all documented in the same encounter.

Since the Index shows that:
  • J43.9 (Emphysema, unspecified) includes COPD
  • J44.89 (Other COPD) also includes emphysema
I am unclear which combination is correct when both COPD and emphysema are documented along with a specific type of asthma (J45.x).
Which option is correct according to ICD-10-CM guidelines?
  1. J44.89 + J45.x (COPD with emphysema included under J44.89)
  2. J43.9 + J45.x (Emphysema with COPD included under J43.9)
  3. J44.89 + J43.9 + J45.x (Reporting all three codes)
If anyone can clarify the correct coding and the reasoning (especially regarding excludes notes and Index instructions), it would be very helpful.

Thank you!
