I do ICD9 coding in homecare, and we have nurses who are visiting patients with NG and NJ tube feedings. We are there to teach patient/family regarding use and care of NG or NJ tubes, so we always code for the reason they have the tube i.e., pancreatitis, various cancers, dysphagia, feeding difficulties, etc. but is it appropriate to also use V53.50 or V53.59 Fitting and adjustment of intestinal, or gastrointestinal appliance/device? In most cases the clinician is checking correct placement, and following up with necessary cares. I am interested to hear from anyone who has experience using V535x codes. thanks!
