I just found out that I failed my CPC exam 1st attempt. Can anyone give me any advise on how to do better for the second time? I thought I had been prepared, but didn't do nearly as well as I thought. I seemed to have had trouble in the "Series" question, but the training that I had never called anything by that sort of term. Can someone tell me what to study to do better in that specific area?

Thanks

I failed my second try!

I would like to say, there is an easy way, but I studied, took the course review exam over again, and still I failed.

I even got an extra hour because I have a learning disability with reading, so I read slow. I finished the exam this time only to find out today I Failed again this time with a 46% where in July 2016 I got 47%.

I can honestly say, I didn't learn well from this course. It was nothing like, the course tests or exams. No matter how much I studied. It didn't matter. I got a point higher when I didn't even finish the schooling. I was forced to take my first exam without finishing the course. And I had to pay extra for extensions to continue to keep the courses and finish them.

I had to pay for more books because they changed the books from ICD 9 to ICD 10 after the fact I paid in full for my tuition, in order to take the exams.

I can tell you the first time I tried this exam there was a woman that was so mad because she was late and was not let in to the test. She got escorted by security out after making a scene.

I honestly wish I could get back my money, because I was only doing this to work from home because I am disabled and not able to work in a normal atmosphere, because of my complications.

Thought I could support myself again, looks like that is not going to happen now. I believe they took advantage of me and my situation.

I know that many from my first exam didn't pass and I am seeing that this time, many again are not passing. So it is not just me, that is not having success with this.

Good luck, and I would suggest getting other forms of the test to see if you can take it. Study your medical terminology and know the anatomy well, because it is used so much, and read carefully, because there are so many that you can look up, and they seem like they are the same information, so you get confused as to which to use.

And where they do not tell you what you got wrong and the rationale of your finals you don't understand what you are missing.

I hope you have better luck next time. I am done! I cannot afford to take it again.

Many Blessings,

Christylin

CPC exam

Was reading your comments, as I took my test almost a week ago. But have not heard anything. Is there some where/how you can see if you passed on the AAPC website? I do know that your results are mailed to you but someone said if your a member of the AAPC you can find out on there website. But I haven't figured out how to find it or where to go..

series just means section on the cpc exam .....example 1000 series meaning surgery section with the code range of 1000

Read the guidelines, highlight every last one in your book it helped me a lot and made the process of elimination easier, on some questions I was able to eliminate some answers. Before even reading the question, take a lot of notes from what you do remember and put them in the books.

Test results

Hello,

If you go to "My Purchases", and then "Items", choose your test. Your results should be shown there.

I hope that helps.

Good Luck!

I failed my 2nd try. Studied and writes notes in my book. I did do better than my first try but I am just not fast enough to get through the test. I had 80 questions left and I guessed those. I don't get to work with coding to get better and can't seem to get a job with it to get better. The folks I have spoken to work with it everyday and passed it. Not really set up to pass if you don't have any experience!

Highlight, tab, and see what areas were your worst and study those instead of studying the things you did well on. You will pass! Trust me it took me a couple of tries to pass but I did it, so you can pass too. Just study the areas that you scored the lowest on first. But I highly recommend tabbing your CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS book it will make a world of difference and makes series/sections easier to find when going through and with the exam having the questions go by the series/sections of the CPT book you can have that series/section open. You will pass!! Keep your head up you got this!

Did you purchase the practice exams? I took the practice exams over and over and over until I got a 90 on each one. I also purchased the study guide. The questions on the real exam are very very similar to the practice exams and the study guide. I was able to remember the rationales to the questions I got wrong on the practice exams and study guide and apply those to many questions on the exam. I also started from the back of the exam because those questions are much easier and left me plenty of time for the more difficult questions at the beginning.

CPC Exam Tips

i hear you. It took me 3 tries to pass the exam. What helped me is getting practice exams and timing myself to the point I could answer each question in 2 minutes or less. I read the ICD 10 book made notes flagged by category (skin, bone, gyn, ect) and wrote notes on every blank space I could find. The rational behind this is the more familiar you are with the sections means there is less to look up. For example if the question is an abscess and the there's only one answer with L02.XX code listed then you know to check that code before the other answers. This method will also help you eliminate multiple codes for other questions. The easy questions are usually in the back do those first then the rest of the exam. If you're completely lost on a question guess your first instinct is usually right so don't change it unless you know for sure.
I personally think the exam goes well beyond proving one can code and there's a reason why you get 2 tries to take the exam the majority of the population fails it the first time. I hope this helps. Good luck.

i failed the first time also...second time I barely passed..but I studied really hard and I also realize that all the answers are either in your cpt book or icd 10. You just have to know where to look.

I am one that passed on the first try, not just the CPC but COC and CPC-P. They key was I was consistently hitting upper 80's and low 90's on timed practice exams before I sat for the real exam. I think a lot of people take the test unprepared. Like my trainer stated, you don't learn to drive a car by reading the drivers manual, you need to actually go out and practice what is on the driving test.

I also failed my first attempt at the CPC, I have test anxiety I was told that I wouldn't get extended time on my test it wasn't under the ADA. I saw someone comment on here that they got extra time I'm confused.

My best advice is to be sure and Read. Every. Single. Word. in the question. I tend to hurry and skim the text, then slap myself in the forehead later because I failed to see that one word that made all the difference.

Yes, you will also get an email stating your test results are in so log in to AAPC. I got mine less than a week.

When taking the exam allow yourself 1 hour for each section, and move on. When you are done with it and still have time go back to the questions you have left. If you don't know something lightly mark it and move on. If you have time at the end get back to it,

Can someone please tell me how to re-sign up for the test for the second time without the 399.00 coming up. I just failed it and I want to get in the next retake but I can't figure out how to do it?
