hey guys
what's the criteria for charging for this is a non global period during an office visit where silver nitrate is applied to granulation tissue. I'm having a little trouble finding specifics of some rules about this code when it can be charged. at first i thought simple application during an office e/m was just included in the e/m but now i'm thinking i should be charging for it?

thanks for any thoughts! :)

We have charged 17250 with an E/M several times without issues. Here are a few examples of times we have billed for both the E/M & 17250:

Newborn comes in with problems related to problems to the umbilical stump, the provider performs an exam, MDM determines that it's an umbilical granuloma and needs to have silver nitrate applied.

Patient comes in due to thumb injury (cut off tip), unable to control bleeding, there is nothing to suture, provider applies silver nitrite to try to control/stop bleeding.

The provider didn't know ahead of time that silver nitrate needed to be applied, so you can bill for both the E/M & procedure. You just need to make sure that the documentation supports both.

Where is the granulation tissue? If it is external you can use 17250, but will have to use an unlisted if on the cervix, etc.
