We are a lab billing 87633. We were getting paid by Medicare for this code without problem until recently. Medicare has advised that they updated their policy as of 8/31/20 (but it is NOT available for public review currently) (that's what they said) - but they are verbally saying that for claims received after 8/31/20 CPT 87633 (Infectious agent detection by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA); respiratory virus (eg, adenovirus, influenza virus, coronavirus, metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus), includes multiplex reverse transcription, when performed, and multiplex amplified probe technique, multiple types or subtypes, 12-25 targets) is no longer medically necessary for an ambulatory pt? Does anyone have any information about this since we can't review a policy? AND - does anyone have a suggestion for a CPT code that is a replacement or a crosswalk code or something that I can look at?
