I am looking for a procedure code for an oral cancer screening. The patient has no symptoms. Doctor is an oral surgeon, as well as a provider of durable medical equipment. He is using the ICD code Z12.81 as primary and G47.33 as the secondary diagnosis. They do have a history of obstructive sleep apnea, being treated with an custom fabricated oral appliance. Otherwise, the patient is healthy and no family history of diseases. I am not finding much information. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Oral cancer screening is not one of the services recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force (see below). Because of this, it's a service that would not be offered as a covered preventive benefit by most payers, and would not be assigned its own CPT code. If your physician wishes to bill for this screening, you would need to use the unlisted preventive medicine service code 99429. You'd probably want to notify the patient of this and get their consent prior to performing it as they would likely end up being responsible for the charges.

The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for oral cancer in asymptomatic adults.
