One of the oncology ortho docs is performing this procedure. She is using a balloon to open up the space then using cement to augment the defect from the lesion. I have searched everywhere and only finding mixed results as far as proper coding. The majority of what I see is an unlisted code, but no information for a comparison code. I'm curious if anyone else has a provider that performs this procedure and how you code it.

Agree with Marissa - unlisted with comparison to kyphoplasty.

However, if you think about excision of benign tumors of bone or cysts, the cement augmentation is included. And if the surgeon takes out a large mass and then has to subsequently fix the scetabular wall, that could be considered more akin to ORIF of an acetabular fracture. If there is a pathologic fracture that can be documented, then you could use 2722X as a primary code without having to resort to an unlisted for preaithorization.

I would discuss this with the surgeon so that he or she understands the issue and makes sure the operative description is in agreement with the code selected and vice versa.
