When critical care is rendered - if both the physician and a NP are working with the patient, can the NP start the progress note and the physician finish or change and add to the note - still render the assessment and plan and order testing, etc. and the visit be billed under the physician? Everything is still reviewed and done by the physician but the NP assists with the note.

Critical care can not be split/shared so the scenario you are describing could not be billd as critical care under either provider.

Unlike other E/M services where a split/shared service is allowed the critical care service reported shall reflect the evaluation, treatment and management of a patient by an individual physician or qualified non-physician practitioner and shall not be representative of a combined service between a physician and a qualified NPP.
