Cysto, stent removal

When patients come in for a cystoscopy stent removal from a stone procedure; what are you using for the ICD 10 code? I was told by the coder who trained me to use the diagnosis of why the stent was put in.

I would not use the original diagnosis from a stent placement at a prior encounter unless the provider has documented that it is an active condition still under treatment at the encounter you are coding. If the only documented reason for the encounter is for the stent removal, then I would use Z46.6 - encounter for fitting and adjustment of urinary device.

we were told we can use T19.8XXA, T19.8XXA or Z46.6 ( I haven't received any denials)

I think that we have to code it as z46.6 as we are changing the stent without any complication.
