Per CPT guidelines, "Subsequent to the decision for surgery, one related Evaluation and Management (E/M) encounter on the date immediately prior to or on the date of procedure (including history and physical)" is included as part of the global package. If the provider is called and asked his opinion over the phone about a case and the provider decides to have the patient prepped for surgery the next day, is that considered the "decision for surgery"? When the provider comes in and actually sees the patient and documents his visit, would that visit be considered part of the global package since the decision for surgery was made over the phone?
