hi..i think i would just code the arrythemia in this case...but, patients defibrillator fired off and pat. came to hospital. There were no complications...just arrythmia...how would you code? thanks

I would code this as 996.04, complication of mechanical implant, cardiac AI defrbrillator. The pt would not have come in if the machine had not "fired off".

Hope this helps. :)

I'm curious as to why you would code this as a complication, the defib is set to fire at a certain range, why would this be a complication? It's doing what it's set to do. Your not the only one who would use this code, I've had discussions with others and they code the same thing. I have never been convinced it's a complication. Would appreciate your reply, would like to understand your reasoning. Thanks!
