If a patient has two insurances and the primary denies (denial is appealed and upheld), do you have to bill the secondary insurance? A co-worker was told to adjust and to not bill the secondary at all.

If you participate with the 2ndary, you wouldn't be able to bill the patient without billing the 2ndary. You certainly COULD write it off before billing 2ndary, but I'm not sure why you would.

To me, it would depend on why the primary denied. For example, if it was not filed timely, I would understand writing it off. If it was denied as not part of the patient's benefit plan, I would absolutely bill 2ndary and then patient if 2ndary also deemed patient was responsible.

Completely agree; you should be billing the secondary plan before billing the patient or writing off.
