Hello, I am a coder in a dermatology practice. We ordered bloodwork to find the underlying cause of allopecia. The only diagnosis that we had was the hair loss and insurance is denying the claim for the bloodwork, leaving the pt with a high balance due. IS there a code to link to the order form for ruling out auto-immune disease, or inflammatory causes, or external trauma , or infections?

if you have the results and have ruled it out then yes use a Z03 code as the first listed code and the hair loss as the secondary. If you do not have the results, I suggest holding the claim and wait for them. otherwise you only have the symptoms to go by. there are no codes for a rule out condition only for when it has been ruled out.
