If a dialysis patient who has never been seen in the office and only at the dialysis center goes into the hospital and the Nephrologist is called into the hospital to see the patient and supervise his dialysis services does the doctor bill the initial hospital visit or a subsequent visit? Thank You for your help

Do you mean for Inpatient or OutPt/OBSV? There is no New or Est patient rules for inpatient encounters.

Was he called in for a Consult?

If the patient is Medicare (another physician admitted), then your physician codes 99221-99223 for his inital inpatient evaluation. Medicare doesn't recognize consult codes

If the patient is not Medicare (or a payer who follows the Mcare consult rule), then your physician codes either as a consult with 99251-99255 or as a subsequent visit with 99231-99233

Does this answer your question?

We bill for staff assisted home hemo dialysis is there anyone that is familiar with the coding? We are a small company and are expanding, we are not contracted with
any insurance carriers. We would love to find a forum to discuss billing strategies.
