I would like to present a senerio:
lets say Dr.x performs a brain death exam on 1/2/10 and then on 1/3/10 Dr. z performs the second brain death exam and pronouns the patient dead. Both physicians work in the critical care unit of the hospital. Now on 1/10/10, Dr. x submits a discharge note with the 1/3/10 date as the discharge date. Dr. z on 1/3/10 submits note of the exam and a code of 99291, 50mins with patient. So how would the 1/3/10 date of service be billed? Should the discharge go to Dr.z since they were the physican who actually declared the patient dead?
