Hi. I have a question regarding auditors and current coding books. When an auditor goes to a provider's office to do an onsite audit, is it also part of the audit to ask and make notes about whether or not the office is using current ICD-9 and CPT books? How about asking if the provider has access to current coding books? I work for a local government health department, and I told the program supervisors that they should have at least one current copy of each coding book in their clinic, in case the provider wished to select a code that was not on the encounter form / superbill. The question back to me was, basically, do the auditors even ask about coding books? Well, now I need to get back to them with an answer before they will consider ordering books for 2012. If anyone knows, thanks for sharing!
